Sociological Concepts in Things Fall Apart
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper that analyzes Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart (1959). The writer argues that this work can be viewed as a comprehensive sociological study of Nigerian Igbo culture. Okonkwo, Achebe's protagonist, is a member of this tribe and is considered the quintessential embodiment of its militaristic ideals. As this fact suggests, examination of this novel, its plot and characterizations, conveys to the reader a great deal of sociological detail about this Nigerian people. This examination shows how Achebe tells Okonkwo's story against the backdrop of his own culture and worldview, which includes sociological information on the many areas. These include the militaristic ethos of the Igbo tribe; the Igbo orientation towards women; religious orientation; xenophobic reaction to "others" outside their tribe; and the encroaching influence of British colonialism.
